Top Two Things You Need to Know Before Buying an Uninterruptible Power Supply

Electrical power is so unpredictable nowadays. That is why it is essential for you to use a UPS. Uninterruptible Power Supply is a device that can provide emergency power to your computer when the power from the main line is off.

Buying UPS is not easy. A lot of factors are to be considered. For me to help you buy your UPS, here are the top two basic things you must understand before buying a UPS.

How much power do your devices require?

This is the first thing you need to ask yourself. A basic UPS can only power one desktop computer unit and plugging in two units may cause an issue. Ask yourself how much power the devices connected to the UPS will consume.

If the devices need more power than what UPS can supply, they will go dead even if the batteries are full of charged. As in dead they will not open because the power is insufficient. Think of it like a typical power supply, if the wattage is lower than what the computer need, then you are dead.

Typically, watt rating is indicated at the back panel or front panel of an electronic device. You can also check it by using a wattmeter. Just bear in mind to check the consumption of everything you need to power. If multiple devices are need to be powered, let’s say a desktop and a laptop, you just simply need to add their wattage.

How long do you need to run your devices with the UPS?

Next thing to ask yourself is, how long do your devices need to run when the power form the main source is off? Most of the buyers buy UPS because they want to have a few minutes to shut down the devices properly and save any work that they are currently performing on these device, while others wants UPS for them to work hours through blackouts which may last as long as an hour. Decide how and what do you want to achieve in terms of hours or minutes for the UPS to run your devices.

Understanding these two factors will help you buying the perfect UPS for your application. Also you may further ask for the sales person attending you at the store. They too are knowledgeable about the matter.
